Scotland v Switzerland: Hanley oldest outfield starter since Ally

Souness takes no prisoners as Scotland prepare for crucial Euro 2024 clash

Sensational Scotland stunned Spain in heroic triumph to boost Euro 2024 hopes

Grant Hanley is set to become Scotland's oldest outfield starter at the European Championship finals since Ally McCoist when he lines up against Switzerland on Saturday.

The Norwich City defender, 30, has been a mainstay in Steve Clarke's side in recent years and is expected to keep his place in the starting XI for the crucial Group D clash in Baku.

If Hanley does start, he will become the oldest outfield player to start for Scotland at a major tournament since McCoist, who was 32 when he played in the 1996 European Championship.

Former Scotland captain Graeme Souness has been impressed by Hanley's form for both club and country and believes he is a key player for Clarke's side.

"Grant Hanley is a very good player," Souness said. "He's strong, he's good in the air and he's a good passer of the ball.

"He's also a leader and he's not afraid to speak his mind. I think he's a really important player for Scotland."

Scotland are expected to make a number of changes to the side that beat Spain 2-1 in their opening match of Euro 2024.

Kieran Tierney is a doubt with a minor knock, while Ryan Fraser is suspended after picking up a yellow card against Spain.

Clarke is likely to recall Scott McTominay and John McGinn to the starting XI, while Che Adams could also come into the side.

If Scotland are to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages, they will need to get a positive result against Switzerland.

The Swiss are ranked 13th in the world and will be a tough test for Clarke's side.

However, Scotland have shown in the past that they can beat the best teams on their day.

They will need to be at their best if they are to get a result against Switzerland.
